Turning a beautiful old building into a modern, welcoming community space is no small feat — especially when that building is Grade II listed. Every decision has to balance preservation with purpose. Can we install insulation without losing original features? Can modern lighting be fitted without damaging 19th-century beams?… When we first reopened the doors, one of our goals was simple: to make the station a place people actually wanted to spend time in. Not just pass through. And so the events began… Over the past month, we invited our community to take part in a friendly design challenge — to create an alternative logo for LocalMotive.org.uk that reflects the spirit of our arts and community space in Mytholmroyd. The response was incredible, with dozens of entries ranging from hand-drawn sketches to polished digital art…. The station building now hums with creative energy thanks to the amazing artists who’ve made it their home. From painters to ceramicists, illustrators to textile designers — each resident brings something unique to the space.,, It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come. What was once an abandoned railway station — cold, crumbling, and closed to the public — is now a vibrant hub for creativity and connection. When the community first stepped in to reclaim the building, there was no roadmap. Just a shared belief that this space could be more — more than bricks and mortar, more than history — a place for people to gather, make, share, and belong…Behind the Scenes: Renovating a Grade II Listed Building
